The Bike

The bike or even bike(s) which will be used for the RAAM will get a very tough test indeed. Searing heat, occasional pot holes and being used for around 20 hours per day covering a total distance of over 3000 miles. Stuart, as our equipment manager and mechanic certainly has his work cut out for him as there is sure to be a good few punctures along the way!

The RAAM rules state that any amount of bicycles may be used during the race and that disc and carbon spoke wheels are as equally valid as normal metal spoke wheels. This gives riders the opportunity to use different bikes for different purposes during the race, for example a normal road racer for very hilly and difficult conditions due to its handling. Tri bikes are optimal bikes for long flat roads because of the speed and aerodynamics and a Tri adapted road racer for conditions in between.

For obvious reasons the bikes take centre stage during the race as a good set of bikes may be the difference between finishing or not. Extra wheels and frames are also a consideration.
