Welcome to the Team Epilepsy Forward website. My name is Katie and I'm the crazy person attempting to cross 3000 miles of American soil in 12 days using nothing but pedal power. Why on earth am I doing this I hear you ask? Well, I suffer from Epilepsy, a condition which amongst other things affects your ability to drive. Because of this, many people believe they will lose their independence as a result of having Epilepsy. The aim of TEF is to prove this belief to be wrong. This is by no means TEF's only aim in competing in the Race Across America. We also hope to raise awareness of Epilepsy and funds for the fantastic organisation the team has been set up to help - The National Society for Epilepsy. First Aid for Epilepsy
Here is a quick guide to how to help somebody who you suspect or know is having a seizure:
- stay calm and talk in calm reassuring tones
- try and move the person away from any danger such as roads or sharp objects
- if possible put something soft such as a jacket underneath their head
- DO NOT restrain them or put anything near their mouth
- stay with them until they recover from the seizure
Phone 999 if:
The seizure lasts longer than 5 mins, you believe it to be their first seizure, one fit directly follows another, they have injured themselves or have trouble breathing.
